Hard as it may be to believe, the Norwegian band Shining started playing over a decade ago as an acoustic band, where saxophone and guitar player Jørgen Munkeby (then a member of the famous collective Jaga Jazzist, as well) expressed his fascination with the music of Nils Petter Molvær and his ilk. Then The Shining plugged in and kicked the tempo up a bit. The title of their latest album says it all — “Blackjazz.” It’s a combination of free jazz, Scandinavian black metal, and King Crimson’s best years. Powerful stuff. |
